At the Starting Line

Me.

Hey! My name is Sterling, and about a year and half ago, I had a crazy idea. I decided I wanted to go abroad to live for a year as a foreign exchange student.

This idea didn't totally come out of nowhere; when I was in third grade I lived in the Netherlands (while my dad was on sabbatical) one of my cousins was a foreign exchange student through AFS (the American Field Service). When I grow up, I want to travel the world. Once I decided that I wanted to abroad, also through AFS, one country came out in my mind in particular. I decided I wanted to go India.

This was due to a couple of reasons. It seems to me like every American student who goes abroad goes to a Spanish-speaking country or to a Western European one, and being the person that I am, I wanted to not do what other people do. And since I'd already lived in Europe anyway, I wanted to go somewhere I hadn't already been (I know, I hastily wrote off an entire continent, but well they're are plenty of other good places). I wanted to learn a new language, so any English-speaking country was out (although people speak English everywhere). Also, I wanted to go outside of my comfort zone.

And I'd be lying if I said that I didn't love India itself. Those of you who know me, know that I'm a big Geography Buff, and that I'm always reading about other countries' history and cultures. India is one of my favorite countries, and I love its food, art, and people. And this year, I'd like to come face to face with as much of India as I can. And since I've had so many friends, family members, neighbors, and all kinds of people tell me that I should share my adventures with them, I've decided to start a blog. So this is where I'm going to post a bunch of pictures of the cool things I get to see this year!

Stay tuned!
